The place known as the “Rama 4 Tailor” was originally recommended to me by Mui, an independent tailor.

It seems to be a nickname commonly used among Japanese expat wives, simply because it’s located on Rama 4. But the shop’s actual name is this:

Baan Chang Som Tailor
2701/23 Soi Chai Mongkhon, Rama IV Road, Khlong Toei, Bangkok 10110

It’s about a 20-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station.

This tunnel was the reason I got lost.

There was a tunnel right along the road, but I never imagined the shop could be beyond it, so I walked right past without thinking twice.

If you’re planning to go, the tunnel might actually be a helpful landmark.

Once you come out of the tunnel, you should be able to spot the shop on your right-hand side.
(See the first photo — there’s no signboard or anything, so it’s easy to miss.)

On the first floor, there were several tailors working at sewing machines lined up side by side.
If you walk past them, there’s a staircase leading up to a room on the second floor, where you place your order.

There were custom-made garments hanging around the room, and the whole place had such a strong real tailor shop atmosphere that I couldn’t help but feel excited.

I showed up without an appointment, which was definitely not ideal, but they somehow managed to make time for me.

It’s a popular shop and reservations are apparently essential.

This time, I chose a light blue fabric (on the left in the photo).
Once again, I brought printed reference images, and just to be safe, I also brought one of my own dresses that I wanted them to use as a guide.
(That’s the red one in the photo on the right.)

They also spoke English, which made the whole process smooth and easy.

This was my second piece for myself, but it was the first time I had a fitting.

Next Journey : The before and after of the fitting.
