Songkran is Thai New Year.

The word Songkran comes from Sanskrit and means “to move” or “to pass into.” It refers to the sun completing its twelve-month cycle and moving into Aries.

Traditionally, it is a time to pour water over Buddha images and stupas as a gesture of purification and respect.

It is also widely known around the world as the Water Festival — a traditional Thai celebration that is loved not only for its meaning, but also as a way to cool off in the heat.

Since this will be my first Songkran, I’m really excited.

Around the middle of March, I started noticing Aloha shirts everywhere.

Apparently, in Thailand, there is a custom of welcoming the New Year by wearing bright floral shirts.

They’re all so colorful, bold, and cute.

Printed clothes don’t usually suit me very well, but since it’s such a special festival, I want to wear florals too!!!

While I was still trying to decide what to wear, I happened to spot this outfit on a mannequin at Big C.

I thought, This might actually work for me, since it has a lot of white in it and feels a little easier to wear.

So I bought two of them.

  • 100 baht each
  • 200 baht total

Now the question is: how cute can I make them with a little customization?

After going back and forth on what to do, I decided to ask the sewing uncle in Thonglor to remake them for me.
